Research interests
My main research areas are the microbiology of heavy metals and of the sulfur cycle as well as the biodegradation of recalcitrant chemicals. Besides elucidating the underlying reaction mechanisms, I focus on thermodynamic and physiological problems.
Current research
-
Biodegradation of fuel oxygenates
- Growth of Aquincola tertiaricarbonis on MTBE, ETBE and TAME
- Biochemistry and biotechnological use
-
Sulfur oxidation in acidophilic prokaryotes
- Oxidation of inorganic sulfur compounds in the autotrophic genus Acidithiobacillus
- Oxidation of inorganic sulfur compounds in acidophilic heterotrophs
-
Leaching of metal sulfides in acidophilic prokaryotes
- Visualization of attachment and biofilm formation
- Gene expression
